GOITRE.
COMMON IN SfASTERTON. SAYS DR. ELEANOR BAKER.
“Goitre is very common in Masterton,” said Dr. Eleanor S. Baker, relieving school medical officer, to an “Age” representative on Monday, when commenting on her inspection of the local schools. “Masterton is distinctly a goitre centre; the malady is more prevalent than I expected. Chiefly girls are affected, but boys also have the complaint, and 1 think it quite worth while to try the prophylactic treatment.’’ This consisted of giving very minute doses or anything containing iodine, continued the doctor. A great deal of good had been done in this way in Canterbury, though the results were not ns wonderful as those claimed in America and Switzerland. The cause of goitre had never been discovered, explained Dr. Baker. Several theories—including one that it was due to certain properties in water—had been disproved, but it was known that the growth was more prevalent in certain localities.
