NO TELEPHONE INCREASES.
The rumour, which seems to have arisen with a Christchurch paper, that there is to bo an increase in the tele phone charge, is groundless. According to the “Sun," the increase was to be 50 per cent, with additions also for mileage. The rumour was accepted if some quarters as substantial, and the Pahiatua Borough Council passed a resolution protesting against the increases. We. have the Primo Minister's authority for denying it alto gather. “No proposals for an increase, ’ ’ Mr Massey says, ‘ ‘ have been submitted to Cabinet, and moreover I have reason to believe no proposals have even come before the PostmasterGeneral." The time is certainly not opportune for increasing the charge tor telephones. If they should ever be altered we fancy it will be in the direction of charging by the number and duration of the calls. That is the only equitable way of doing it.
