DISTRICT NEWS.

SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (Our Travelling Reporter.) The directors of the Park vale cheese factory met yesterday and decided to advance 6d per lb of butter-fat for the February suppliers and an additional 3d per lb back pay. The Featherston County Council is experienceing some difficulty in obtaininfg the payment of rate® on one soldier settlement, and if these are not met during the next month the county solicitor will be instructed to sue for them. •

At the last meeting of .the Featherston County Council it was intimated by Cr. J. C. Bidwill '(acting treasurer) that in the event of someone being elected to take the place of Cr. A. D. McLeod (treasurer), he was not an aspirant for the position, as he resided too far from the County office. Cr. Matthews said that in the olden days, when he was treasurer, he had to drive 14 miles in a buggy to the County office, and he failed to see the hardship imjxjsed on Cr. Bidwill, who had a motor car and was only 12 miles distant. Cr. Bidwill admitted his excuse was without merit. He thought it would be a graceful act to appoint Cr. W. B. Martin to the position, as it was held by hi. 1 late father, and he believed that gentleman would accept it if offered him. Mr P. H. Smith, of Carterton, accompanied by Mrs Smith, left yesterday on a trip to the South Island, where they will visit Christchurch, Dunedin and Jnvercargill.

The annual meeting of the Dalefield Football Club is to be held on Thursday evening, and that of the Carterton Club on Friday evening. Local body history was recounted at the Featherston County Council meeting last week. In .tendering his resignation, Qr. A. D„ McLeod said that if there was one thing more than another he wa s proud of assisting to thwart it was the threatened division of the county. Councillor A. Mathews said that probably Cr. McLeod was having a thrust at him. If ever he made a mistake it was in assisting to break up the county. He had just returned in bad health from a visit to the Old Country, and was prevailed upon to oppose the removal of the Council Chambers from Featherston to Martinborough, which aimed at a division of tho county. His better judgment, he admitted, had been swayed by parochalism and ill-health, but it had taught him a lesson. Big preparations are being made by the committee of the Greytown Horticultural Society for the autumn show', which is set down for Thursday week.

The Greytown Territorials who participated in the shooting at Trenthiam last week won over £l4 in prize money.

Mr J. W. Ellis expects to leave Carterton next month en route for England, where he intends to study for the medical profession. He will be accompanied by Air® Ellis, whose people reside in England.
