DISTRICT NEWS.

MAURICEVILLE. (Special to “The Age.”) Feeling is running high in the Rifle Club here over the time required to get rifles sent through the Defence Department. A number of rifles have been on order for some months and still no appearance. The heavy rain of Thursday afternoon and night caused much damage to roads, fencing and paddocks adjacent to the river bank. The Kopuaranga stream rose 5£ inches higher than any of the floods experienced during spring. A shortening of hands at the lime /works takes place to-day. A stoat was noticed to-day, rolling nen eggs taken from a nest, a distance of a chain across the main road. The eggs were kept rolling by the animal pushing with its nose. A credit balance of £8 llg was cleared by the school committee over, the late picnic. A large number of swaggers are passing through at the present time, the majority of them being aged or feeble men. IShefep-dipping is nearing completion. It was not necessary to apply for an extension of time on account of no water, but the application narrowly missed use for want of dry ; weather.
