COUNCIL ABOLISHED.
BY ROYAL ASSENT. (Received 5.5 p.m.) Brisbane, March 12. —The Prime Minister announces that the Governor has received a cable that the Royal assent has been given to the Queensland Legislative Council Abolition Bill, and that the necessary Order-in-Council has been passed. The Upper House, therefore, was dead. He added that for many years it had thwarted the will of the people and had become a drag upon democracy. Few would mourn its fate, and fewer still would hope for its resurrection. This was the first time such action had been taken by any Sovereign State, so far as he knew.— (A. and N.Z.)
