BOROUGH DRAINAGE WORKS

(To the Editor.) Sir.— I notice the Borough Council has wisely decided, in order to relieve the unemployment difficulty in this town, to proceed with the above-mentioned works. It was stated that about 30 good men are available, and I would suggest that these men shall be allowed to do this work by contract, instead of the wretched system of daywork, which has been tMe curse of all concerned for so long. Should my suggestion be carried out, the men will be given the best possible opportunity of improving their financial position, and will reap the full value of their practical experience and industry. and the advantages to the Borough equally are obvious.—l am, etc., AN OLD HAND.
