PRODUCERS’ DIFFICULTIES.

COMMERCIAL SYMPATHY. (To the Editor.) Sir, — I read with interest the pointed remarks addressed to the Masterton Chamber of Commerce recently by Mr L. T. Daniell. To save him any false hopes, however, as to the suggested invocation of co-operation from the associated chambers of commerce in the matter of advancing the interests of primary producers, it is only necessary for publicity to be given to Christchurch newspaper reports of the Dominion Conference. A proposal submitted by the Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce having for its objective assisting to tide farmers with good margins of freehold security over their temporary difficulties, was defeated by a large majority, and the enclosed brief newspaper report is self explanatory:—

“Mr A. C. Holms said: ‘Commerce and the secondary industries were so depenuent upon the welfare of primary producers that the conference should not display any antagonism to the proposed State guarantee, which could not be objected to to any greater extent than the guarantee behind the Bank of New Zealand, or the backing of the Southland electric power loan, successfully floated recently in London.’ ”

Representation of a greater number of country Chambers at each annual conference would be helpful in promoting a better understanding of the country point of v?ew—i.e., recognition of primary, secondary and commercial interdependence.—l am, etc., A. C. HOLMS.
