CASTLEPOINT COUNTY COUNCIL.

At the adjourned statutory meeting of the Castlepoint County Council, held on May 28, Cr. W. G. Groves was unanimously elected chairman for the current year. The monthly meeting was then held, there being present Crs. W. G. Groves (chairman). C. N. Stilborn, S. and E. H. Schofield, and H. C. Beiliss. The -Minister of Public Works forwarded a schedule of unredeemed authorities, requesting that details covering actual commitments be furnished to the District Engineer. Debentures were received from the Advances Office re Manawa road loan or £2'oo, requesting that same be retained until such time as payment is required to meet expenditure which has actually been incurred. The Public Works Department reported that it had paid £5O into die County fund account on account of grant, £1 for £l, for Penrose road. The Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board furnished estimates, etc., of its expenditure for the year ending March 31, 1922. and applied for the sum of £172 19s 9d in payment of first quarter’s levy. The Mana wat-u County Council forwarded a circular ueaThlg with local bodies’ dues tor maintenance of hospitals, etc. —Received. 1 he Masterton County Council reported that a conference of WairArapa County Councils iiad been convened to consider a proposal to engage a permanent engineer tor its own and the adjoining counties, and desired that, two Councillors be appointed as delegates to attend a conference in Masterton on June 6.—The Council resolved that as there was no probability of it requiring an engineer foi some time, excepting for the construction of the Whareama. bridge (which Sladden and Pavit-t had m hand), it would not be represented at . the conference. Che Wairarapa County Council forwarded list of reduced wages which the conference of local bodies had decided to pay as from June 1, and it was resolved that surfacemen and casuals be paid wages on a par with tiie rates supplied. On account of the extra cost of horse feed, etc., it was resolved to pay the following rates for drivers and teams: Driver, three horses and dray, 375; driver and two-horse team, 31s; driver, one horse and dray, 25s per day. The Bank of New Zealand notified that they had recorded a continuance of the voerdraft limit of £2OOO. It was resolved to inform the Marine Department* that the Council approves of the old rate of landing charges at Castlepoint, viz., wool Is per bale, merchandise 5s per ton. It was decided that a meeting of ratepayers be called by advertisement for June 15. at 2 p.m., to discuss matters of interest to the county. E. H. Smith wrote stating that the road between Dickens's gate and Ann edale was in a bad state, and re quested that it be improved.—Cr. C. Stilborn was empowered to expend up to £lO on necessary work. The treasurer’s report, showing a debit balance of £289 Is 7d, was read and approved. The overseer’s report was read and adopted, and he was instructed to dispense witii all casual labour and teams at the earliest, and not to engage other casual workers without the authority of the Councillors for the Ridings interested. The question of getting and crushing metal from Mungapakeha and Langdale quarries was discussed, and it was resolved to call alternative tenders for the work about Jtint 15. Wages and accounts amounting to £llB5 15s 5d were passed for payment. It was resolved that all future, ordinary meetings of the Council be held at 10 a.m.
