SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS.

Small drafts of fat lambs may have been seen on the roack in South Wairarapa yesterday making towards the Featherston railway station, their ultimate destination being the Meat Export Company's works. An additional vate has recently been placed in the Lake View cheese fac tory, making four in all. Modern scales have also been installed. This factory, by the way, is making an advance of *2s per lb on butter fat. About forty employees of the Waingawa meat works who reside in Carterton have been suspended pending killing operations that are deferred owing to the dispute between the employers and slaughtermen. The girls of the secondary classes of the Carterton District High School were yesterday taken for an outing to the gorge to the west of Carterton iu charge of Miss Haddrell, M.A. The following was contained in the headmaster's (Mr A. J. Cowles) report to the Carterton School Committee : "As this is the last report that I shall have the privilege of making to your Committee as headmaster, I desire to place on record my best thanks for and my high appreciation of the work of the School Committee during my six years and seven months' term of office. The Committee has co-operated with me in everything that was to benefit the school with the happiest results. I desire also, through the Committee, to thank the townspeople and the parents for their support, especially iu the matter of punctuality and regular attendance of their children. 'Further, I wish to state that the staff, past and present, have supported me loyally in the work of the school, and to them is due great praise for the state of the school today. It is with* great regret that I leave a place where I have been so happy in my work, but one must march with.the times." Tho Chairman expressed regret at the projected departure of Mr Cowles, but complimented him on his promotion to a position that gave scope for his abilities. He moved that the Committee place on record its appreciation of Mr Cowles' services to the school. After other members of the Committee had spoken the motion was put and carVied. At an installation of officers of the Carterton Druids' Lodge visitors were present from Fernlenf (GrsJytown), Stonehenge (Masterton), Newmarket (Auckland), Mungaroa (Upper Hutt) Lodges. The installing officpr was Bro. E. F. Fairbrother (District President) Past Arch Bro. Austin Reid was presented with a. P.A. diploma and jewel P.D.P. Bro. H. J. McKenzie was presented with a travelling rug for introducing the most members during the year. It was reported that during the year the amount of £l6-1 16s 6d had been passed for sick pay and £9-1 for maternity bonuses'. The death took place at Carterton yesterday of Mrs Mary Gibb Johnston, mother of Mr A. Johston, at the advanced age of 8o years. The interment will take place privately at Masterton. The Carterton Borough staff have made a commencement with tarring and sanding High street. , It is expected that over £3O will be netted as result of the entertainment given in Carterton by the Lans-1 downe pupils on Monday evening. Half the net profits will go to the i Memorial Square Fete Fund. At Monday evening's meeting of the! Carterton School Committee a cheque waß received from the teaching staff totalling £2l 9s 6d, the proceeds of the annual fancy dress ball, and suggesting that it be utilised towards improvements to the school grounds. A sum of £6 10s 6d library subscriptions and £2 10s prize money won at the Carterton show was also handed in. It was decided to apply to tho Education Board for a subsidy on the j amount and to lay down an additional tennis court.
