LOCAL BODY VOTES.
lu a recent issue this paper commented upon the striking difference in the amount voted and the amount expended on roads and bridges in late years in the Auckland and Wellington Provinces respectively. The Minister of Public Works has replied that the local bodies arc largely to blame for the non-expendi-ture of the votes. "-This is true only in part. It so happens that in the Wellington Province the major portion of the votes have been on a pound for pound, or pound for two pound basis. That is to say, if the local bodies will provide a half or two-thirds of the money required for a certain work, the Public Works Department will provide tlio remainder. Jn the Auckland Province a great number of the votes have been straight out, and have not required a subsidy by the local bodies. This is where the unfairness of the system arises. .More than that, the local bodies in this district have been advised in recent years that it would he highly inconvenient for them to apply for moneys when there has been so great a drain upon the finances in connection with the war, *
