THOSE SIXTY MILLIONS.
In our issue of Saturday wc drew attention 'to Sir Joseph Ward's remarkable assertion that the Government's commitments for tho present year amounted to over £60,000,000. We opined that Sir Joseph wa3 misleading the people, and that the commitments, if made, would be spread over a period of years. The Prime Minister has hastened to correct the Leader of the Opposition, whose criticism he describes as "the most arrant nonsense a politician ever spoke." Mr. Massey has shown that the actual commitments for the year total £31,262,100, but it would not be possible to spend une-fourth of this amount in a year. The Prime Minister emphasises the point we made on Saturday, that if Sir Joseph Ward had been given all he asked, the commitments would havo been considerably larger than they are. The sixty millions bogey raised by the Leader of the Opposition is not likely to influence the intelligent elector. It is an electioneering device, pure and simple.
