J Mr L. J. Hooper is at present on a visit to Masterton. The resignation of Mr F. K. De Castro, Secretary for Education, is announced. Mr Geo. James Fleming, an old resident of Nelson, and a prominent Rechabite and Forester, is dead, aged 70. Private Martin Carr, of Masterton, who has been in camp for some time, is to enter tho Masterton Hospital niext week to undergo a somewhat serious operation. Corporal E. Waddington, son of Mr E. H. Waddington, of Masterton, who is in the F Company of the 24th Reinforcements, has been promoted to the rank of lance-sergeant. Tlie death occurred on Saturday of a well-known Hawke's Bay settler, in the parson of Mr John David Logan. The deceased, who was forty-two years of age, leaves a widow and young family. A daughter of Reiri Hamuera, a well-known native settler of Te Whiti, died at Foxton last week. The remains wore brought to Masterton on Saturday and interred in the native burying place at Te Whiti. Information has been received of the death at Feilding of a veteran of the Crimean war, Mr Charles Peters. He came to New Zealand about forty years ago from Hastings, England, and has resided ever since at either Feilding or Makino. De-. ceased was seventy-nine years of age. Mrs Jacob Bauer, of Kingsla.nd, Auckland, who died recently, in her seventy-ninth year, wa.s one of Auckland's old identities. She arrived in Onehunga some 57 years ago with her husband, who at that time joined the Waikato Militia, and saw active service in the Maori war, being wounded in ono of tho engagements. On peace being restored they settled in/the Waikato.

A Press Association message from Christchuroh < states that Mr A. H. Turnbull, a well-known merchant, and shipping agent, died there yesterday morning as the result of a."paralytic stroke. He was a son of Mr Richard Turnbull for many years member of Parliament for Timaru. .Deceased leaves a widow and two sons. t One is Oapt. John Turnbull, who is on his way back-to New Zoalandsitinhv the front on a health-recruiting trip, and the other is now in camp. Mr Alex. McMinn, on the literary staff of the "Auckland Star," and formerly of Masterton, has been ordered to relinquish work altogether for a time, as his health is somewhat precarious. Mr McMinn, who is now in his 75th year, was doing fairly heavy work until within the last couplo of weeks, when he experienced a partial break-down', and found it -necessary to abide by medical advice and take absolute rest for a time. He goes to Te Aroha to recuperate.
