LAND FOR SOLDIERS.
AREA ALLOTTED. (Bp. Telegraph—l'reM A x.vriatwu., "WELLINGTON, Thursday. In the course of an interview, the ■Hon 1 . J. Alien stated that the area allotted under the Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Act, 1915, to discharged soldiers now amounted to 70,-196 acres, held by 198 men. Up to the present time 193.067 acres had been formally proclaimed under the Act, which provides for 500,000 acres being made available. In addition to these areas, 732,000 acres of Crown- lands may be applied for at any time either by discharged soldiers or the general public. For the purpose of assisting soldier settlors financially, the Act authorised the Minister of Finance to raise a sum not exceeding £IOO,OOO, and to date advances amounting to £21,333 had been authorised, and £11,996 actually advanced.
