NEW DRAINAGE SCHEME.

THE FUtST SOD TURNED. Tho first sod in the new Borough drainage scheme was turned yesterday morning, without any pretence at ostentation or show, in the vicinity of Bentlcy street, which street will be the first connected with the existing scheme. The work is being carried out by the Borough staff. It is probable that on the completion of Bentley street the connecting up of Cornwall and Pownall streets will follow.

In answer to a question put by an "Age" reporter, the Borough Engineer (Mr James Archer) stated that the letting of any portion of the work by contract would depend entirely upon the labour available. It was more.than probable that the whole of the pipes would be laid by the Borough staff, though it might be found necessary to let some of the excavating and filling-in by contract.
