Mr W. H. Whittaker and his family left Masterton yesterday for their new home at Gordonton, near Hamilton. Mr C. Gallen has been appointed manager of the Belvedere Cheese factory in succession to Mr T. P. Saxeby, who has resigned. A cable was received yesterday, stating tli at Private Eric Cliennells, son of Sir W. B. Cliennells, of Masterton, who is with the New Zealand Forces at the Dardanelles, is quite well. Lance-Corporal George Melrose, son of a well-known railway guard (fprmerly for many years at Cross Creek) who was wounded in the Dardanelles, is now an inmate of the Netley hospital. In a letter dated May 18th, Private H. H. ("Bert") Gaskin, formerly of who has since died, described his wounds as a bullet wound in the left foot and right hip; also a shrapnel wound in the head. Mrs Nancy Bridge, mother of Mr W. Bridge, of "Carterton, died at the residence of her son on Sunday. The deceased lady had been in feeble health for some time, and had been a resident of the district for many years. The 'death occurred on Sunday of an old and respected resident of Napier in the person of Mr H. C. A. Wundranij valuer and inspector of buildings for the ißorough Council. The deceased was seventy-seven years of age. Mr John McPhecrson, Wellington City Foester, who was at one tinie a resident of Masterton., died suddenly about noon yesterday. The deceased, who was a native of Scotland, was about forty years of age. He leaves a widow and a young daughter. Word has been received in Featherston that John Kennedy, brother of Mrs A. and William Kennedy, has gone to the front, having joined the Australian Light Horse. Previous to going to Australia, where he has been for some years, he was well-known in Martinborough and Gladstone. Tn a letter to a friend in Napier, Mr Roy Mesenger, formerly of Masterton, writing from Egypt, states that he has ben appointed to a second lieutenancy in an English regiment, "ud had received orders to proceed to England at once. The death occurred at the Lower Hutt on Sunday of Mr P. L. Harnett, vho was a police constable in Masterton in the early days. Of late years he had conducted a land agency business at the Lower Hutt. News has been received" in Zealand of the death, at Batliurst, New South Wales, on Wednesday last, of Mr John Murray, whose name was well-known in banking circles in this twenty years ago. He was one of the old school of Scottish bankers that haye had so large a share fii the establishment of colonial banking institutions. He entered the service of the Bank of New Zealand in 1863, nnd, with but a very brief interval, was associated with it until his retirement owing to ill-health some thirty -vears later.
