INDISCRIMINATE APPEALS
The time has /arrived when Parliament should step in and put a stop to indiscriminate appeals to the public on behalf of the various patriotic funds. These are at present being made in a haphazard fashion, and the public have no means of ascertaining the bona fides of the person making the appeal. The law should provide that every appeal made, whether by maans of art union tickets, concerts, entertainments, or other processes, shall have tho direct sanction and be under the supervision of the local patriotic committee, which should publish an audited balance sheet in respect to every appeal. It is to be feared that in many of the larger townships the public is at present being exploited by unscrupulous persons. The only way to put a stop to this is to require that the local patriotic committee shall he responsible for every appeal that is made.
