NOTIFICATION OF CASUALTIES

UNSATISFACTORY STATE OF AFFAIRS. (By Telegraph — l'ress Association.) DANNEVIRKE. Last Night. The intimation to-day of the death of Private A. F. Paterson, of the Canterbury Battalion, has disclosed an unsatisfactory condition of affairs m regard to the notification of casualties. On June 11th his father, a solicitor, of Dannevirke, received a wire from the Minister of Defence stating that Private Paterson was wounded. Mr Patersion Mien cabled for information as to the whereabouts of his son and the nature of his injury. On June 2()t'i he received a telegram signed by the Secretary of the G.P.0., Wellington, that Private. Paterson was progressing favourably. This morning he received another wire, advising him of the death of Private Paterson on May 30th of wounds received in action. ' Private Paterson was actually dcxul on June 11th when information was first sent through to his parents that he v.v.s wounded.
