SEVERE ACTION IN PROGRESS

BRITISH TROOPS OCCUPY TOP POSITION.

GERMAN INFANTRY FORCE WIPED OUT

(Received This Morning, 12.50 o'clock.) PARTS, August 31. A severe action is in progress south-westward of Mezieres, on the line between Launois and Signylabbayc, in the Ardennes Department. There are indications that Sir John French's troops are on or south of the line from Guise to Signylabbaye. The Germans are thus facing a salient point, of which the British force is on the top line and the French forces constitute the two wings. It is officially stated in Paris that the German force is attacking from the west front, extending from Guise to Laforen, which ,is north westward of Laon. . It was officially reported at midnight that a German infantry regiment, which was essaying to cross the river Meuse at Sassaye, was prac-

tivally wiped out. , The progress of the German win g forced the French leit to gu-o ground. . , M. Millerand has returned from the front, very favourably impressed with the military situation.
