The news from the theatre of war this morning is a little more encouraging. The Allied forces are engaged in a dSSperato struggle in the Ardennes and appear to be holding the enemy in check. Tins notwithstanding, the ominous news is cabled that buildings are being destroyed in tho neighbourhood of Paris to give the -guns of the city forts a clear range. The fighting all along the line has been of a sanguinary trader, and in several cases the Germans have been repulsed with heavy losses. In one case a whole regiment was wiped out. The Allies have formed a crescent extending from Amiens to Abbeville, on the coast. M. Millerand, French Minister of War, who ha just returned from the front, expresses himself well .satisfied with the situation. Meanwhile the Russian forces are continuing to press forward in the east, and are devastating the country. German reinforcements have arrived, and are reported to have assumed the offensive on the Polish frontier. The Austnans appear to have become «o demoralised that they are unable to offer further serious resistance. The British War Office is of opinion that if the Allies can keep the enemy at close grips in France, there can be only one conclusion to the campaign.
