MISS CHRISTIE'S LECTURE.

The first lecture heard in Alasterton upon the now world-wide "wider of tho Star in tho East" was delivered in Murray's Hall last night by Miss C. W. Christie, travelling organising secretary for New Zealand, and was thoroughly enjoyed by V.-.e audioncu. A beautifully -coloure i portrait of tlie head of tho order (Mr J. Kxishuamurti) held a prominent position on the book bench, surrounded by magazines, books and pamphlet and'attracted much interest and admiration. The lecture, "The Coming of the World Teacher," was, divided under five heads: (1) The origin and meaning of the. Order and tho real meaning of the late attacks upon Mrs Annie Besalit in tho High Courts of Madras, supplemented for other reasons by the Bishop of Madras and the Ma lra& missionaries. (2) The Btory of the Head of the Order and the contradiction of the absurd statement that theosophists thought him to bo the Lord Maitraya' —the Buddhist name for Christ. The whole affair, said the lecturer, was political in origin—an effort of the bomb-throwing, anti-British Indians of North India, loyal to King, jomtry, and their own national religion and who because of the last-mention-ed reason are aided and abetted by the Madras Bishop and the missionari ies of Madras. j ' (3) The ordored ranks of evolving i souls, rising grade by grade until, adeptship was reached, and the work ' of otto flection of this glorious Hierarchy, called the Masters because they of their own free will returned to earth,to teach'us instead of enjoying tho eterna* bliss which was theirs by right of conquest—the cdnquest of death .'and sin. All through the ages such divine men have appeared to found religions, to .mirk the rise and fall' of nations and Km teach those able to understand, tho hidden mysteries of Nature and the way to the entrance of the "strait" gate and-narrow path which leads t<* the "second birth," and over which shines the "Star in the East," ever the symbol of the birth of a soul into the '"Kingdom of Heaven."/ (4) A vivid description of the time 2000 years ago when the Lord Christ, using the body of the Lord Jesus, gave the keynote of self-sacrifice to the religion ndw that of Christendom, and thus marked the end of an old dispensation and the Birth of a new, was compared with the present time, and a striking parallel shown. (5) A beautiful allegory (founded on an old Eastern story) of the Statue of Truth and the breaking up of Religion into religions by the Lord of all the religions of the world, and their final reuniting of them by Him at His promised return. Miss Christy does, not speak fionr hearsay but from a personal knowledge of the Protector of the Order. Mrs Annie Besant, and of the Head of the" Order (Mr J. and of the circumstances which, took place while she was with them in India, and which were seen by her. She stated clearly that tho incidents reported in many of the church journals in N.Z. to-day and the theosophy expounded ; by them was mostly quite untrue, and generally very silly, although she gave the, writers credit for believing what they wrote.
