Mr W. H. Toohill has been elected president of tho Eketahuna Chamber of Commerce for tho ensuing year. Mrs Harrison Leo Cowio, who ifi well known in Masterton, has gone to South Australia to take part in the no-license campaign there. A Oisborne telegram states that Mr R. G. Black, sheep-farmer, who was injured by falling over a cliff on tho S>tn inst., died yesterday. A Palmerston North, telegram announces the death of Mr William Mardon, aged 81, a very old settler of the district. The deceased formerly resided at Rangiora. Mr F. Feist, who has held the position of Mayor in Carterton for tho past tiiree years, has signified his intention of not seeking Mayoral honours at the next election. Ueter Ngairi, a well known native of Hurunuiorangi Pah, Gladstone, died on Wednesday afternoon. For a number of years ho had suffered, with a growing complaint, and gradually became worse. A tangi is being held at tho pah, and natives ore congregating thero from all over tho district. The Feilding Star of yesterday had tho following:—"Mr Era. .O'Neale and his family left Feilding to-day for Feathorston. Mr O'Neale *as formerly ono of Rongotea's successful farmers, and after two year's retirement in Feilding has again decided to 'get on the land," taking over his fathor's farm. Mr O'Neale, son., of Featherston, comes now to reside in Foilding." A Dunedin telegram announces tho death of Prifessor Scott, Dean of the Medical School at the Otago University, and a member of the University Senato. Tho deceased was born at Edinburgh in 1851, and had a distinguished career at Edinburgh University. After spending some time as house surgeon at the Edinburgh Hospital, and at the Royal Infirmary, Stirling, Scotland, he came to the Otago University in 1877 as' Dean of the Medical Faculty, a position he held until his dealth. He leaves three sons and two daughters. Another old Identity of the Wairarapa passed away in Masterton yesterday in the person, of Mr William Frederick McLaren. The deceased, who was in his sixty-third year, was born at Bray, Wicklow, Ireland, and came to New Zealand with his parents fifty-four years ago. In the early day's ho took up land at Bush Gully, in the Lower Valley, which he farmed successfully for many years. He came to live in Masterton three or four years ago, since when he has been in a precarious state of health.
