TOBACCO-GROWING.

Some months ago an article appeared in this paper, suggesting that inquiries be made into the possibilities of the successful cultivation of the tobacco plant in the North Island. So far as can be ascertained the suggestion was not acted' upon. The visit to New Zealand of Dr'Endlich, a German agriculturist, induces us to revert" to the subject. Dr Endlich expressed some astonishment at Christchurch that the culture of tobacco was not taken up in some portions of the North Island. It was, he said, a crop that was grown successfully in South Germany, and from his observations of the climate and soil, he was of opinion that it could be grown in parts of the North Island. The matter is of some importance to this Dominion, and might well be considered by the Board of Agricuture when it comes into existence, with a view to offering State encouragement to the industry.-
