MISCELLANEOUS.

THE SHEARERS. Mr Laracy informed a Post reporter on Saturday that the men were responding to the call for a levy exceeding well. He added that in addition to the levy of a. lump sum of £IOO had been granted by the union to the strike funds. EFFECT ON LABOUR. Naturally the strike is having a j serious effect on branches of labour other than those directly involved. , In the building and kindred trades there is very little business to be done. Plumbers', painters, plasiterers, and carpenters are all slack. Unions connected with the supply of provisions are kept busy, but clothnig trades are on a slump. Big drapers are taking advantage of the slackness to give their employees their annual holidav leave. PRESSURE ON THE POST OFFICE. The strike, coming as it has at this time of the- year, has thrown very great pressure on the chief post offices. The stoppage of cargo carrying has led to a. despatch of much merchandise by parcel post, especially to the West coast, overland. In addition to the heavy demand made upon the parcels branch of the service, there has had to be contended with the accumulation of mails caused by the dislocation of the ferry services and all this has come about at th<.+ busiest season, of the year for the General Post Office.
