DESPATCH FROM VISCOUNT GLADSTONE. K\LSE AND EN AGGERA TED STATEMENTS. (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) LONDON. November 22. Viscount Gladstone, Governor-Gen-eral of South Africa, in a despatch explains that- the conversion of nine compounds into gaols at-out-stations was essential owing to the numbers oi Indians marching in organised bands and courting arrest. He protests against the false, exaggerated, and mischievous statements current in England. The allegations of _shooting, and flogging to coerce Indians to work are, he ways. absolutely false. The passive registers at the Newcastle mines have resumed and orderly conditions have been restored without serious hardship.
