SPECIAL CONSTABLES.

SWEARING IN AT CHRISTCHURCH. A LEGISLATOR'S OPINION. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Early yesterday morning, and also at noon, Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., swore in two large batches of special constables, many of whom have already proceeded to the camp at Addington. Many professional men are offering their services. Some of the "specials" were working men who came in in their working clothes, though the majority were young fellows employed in offices in town. "The strike is fizzling out in Wellington," remarked the Hon. John Barr, who arrived from Wellington, this morning, to a reporter. Mr Banadded that the misleading statements made in certain quarters regarding the state of affairs in Wellington was largely responsible for matters assuming the aspect they have done in Christchurch. "Yesterday," continued Mr Barr, "Jervois quay, Wellington, was particularly busy, as were also the wharves. Indeed, the port has taken on much the same appearance as it possesses in normal conditions. Steamers, including email coastal steamers, were union ding, and coal and other cargo was being removed in difficult kinds of vehicles."
