FREAK DRESS.
The Lord Mayor of Sydney, discussing the question of passing" a by-law against the wearing of freak dresses, said he considered the innate commonnsenae, collective .modesty, and good taste of woman would he a sufficient deterrent to any venturesome, ill-advised exponent-wearer of freak attire. The two factors of woman's common-sense frnd .man's protective attitude towards hisr own where the proprieties were concerned should prove an insurmountable barrier to the inroads of immodesty or thfe encouragement of grotesque woman's attire. The Lord Mayor appears to have supreme faith in human ..nature, But human nature asserts itself occasionally in a most extraordinary manner. Fashion is everything. And fashion causes wdmen to do peculiar things—particularly in America.
