A VIOLENT ATTACK.
In t;ho conl'so of the debate in the Legislative Council on tho Land Bill, ,Mir William Hall-Jones, took occasion to warn the Government against pursuing a Tiorrowing policy such as that of the Liberal Government in recent years. He also remarked upon tho fact that public opinion in the Dominion had taken a. decided turn- n favour of tho freehold tenure. The New Zealand Times, the official mouthpiece of the Opposition, lias made a violent attack upon the jate High Commissioner for having tin; temerity to challenge the borrowing policy of the Liberals. With a virtuous indignation, peculiar to those who claim that Wardism is the Alpha an:l Omega of financial strategy, the Times whips Sir William hip and thigh, and asks him, in so many words, to wake up and discover that the Massev Government is more reck less in its borrowing than any previous Government. But we can imagine the late High Commissioners' amusement at the violence of his critic. i It is the truth that has stung, and; your self-styled Liberal abhors the 'truth. Sir William Hall-Jones lias;been there, and he knows who has done all t'he borrowing, and how-, they did it. He also knows why the Massey Government has to go on to the London market. So, also, do tho people. !
