DEATH OF SIR WILLIAM RUSSELL.

Tfye death of Sir William Russell, M.L.C., which occurred at his home in Hawke's Bay at an early hour this morning, removes one of the most notable figures from the realm of colonial politics. The deceased • gentleman played an important part in the pioneering work of the Dominion. He fought in the Maori War in the early days, took up land in Hawke's 1 Bay when it was a mere swamp, and worked with his own hands to make ■Sot himself a home. That he succeeded is a, matter of history. For many years he played an important part in the politics- of the country. He was a Minister in the Atkinson Ministry, and became Leader of the Opposition when thac Ministry was defeated. He was always an honourable, fair fighter, who would not hit below the belt. The news of his death will be received with profound regret by all shades of political opinion.
