Poincara, tho President, speaking at Bordeaux, appealed to the larger patriotism of the Girondins. He declared that Franco would obey the demands of peace, but if necessary be ready for a war, the horrors of which would place no limit to the nobility of the country's sacrifices in the protection of its honour.
