MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. Tho -monthly meeting of the- Masterton Comity Council was held in the Countv offices yesterday aftei- \ noon, there being present Crs. W. J. Welch (chairman), D. W. Foreman, J. MUler, A. J. Percy, A. J. Patchett, C. Cross, H. Toogood. The Feat her ston County Council / forwarded information in regard to the stone-crusher in use by that Council. The Castlepoint County Council forwarded its share of the cost of maintenance, to March 31st, 1913. Mr Edward Lee wrote, complaining of trees overhanging Totarastreet, in Lansdowne— The engineer was instructed to take action against persons oifending in this direction. Mr J. Macara wrote, offering £1 for some timber lying near his gate on the Upper Opaki road.—The matter was left in the hands of the engineer to deal with. j The Comnifesioner of Crown Lands intimated the approval of the Land Board of the expenditure of Hute-wai-road thirds on bridges. Messrs W. Falloon, Home, Upston, and fifteen others worte, protesting against tho expensive manner in which the Fernridge-road had | been repaired* It was alleged that tho work was costing 9s a yd, whereas :the cost under the contract was 3s per yard.—The engineer explained that the work was of an extremely urgent nature, and the road was full "of flits. He was paying 25s per teaifi. —The chairman stated that the work ' \vas'costing altogether too much. As | representative of the Riding, he asked the engineer to discontinue the work.—The engineer said he would do so. The urgent part of "the work had been done.—The matter was left in the hands of the representative of the Riding, with the engineer, to deal with.. Messrs A. Nelson, and others, asked the Council to take steps to make certain alterations in the County boundary. Mr W. J. Turkington wrote, stating that he was not in favour of any change in the County boundary-—The matter was held over till next meeting, to enable the Council to communicate further with Mr Turkington. Mr H. N. Kebbell asked permission to Use timber from the old Toj Hoe bridge for cycle bridges on the read between Alfrcdtori : and Castle matter ;ivas left in' the, hands of the engineer ami the member for the riding. A letter from Mr J. MoGrath, complaining of overhanging trees, was referred to the engineer.

The report 1 ' of the meeting of the finance committee was read. ■ ■/The-! treasurer reported a debit on the general account,of £2702 5s lOd, and a credit on the local bodies loans account of £152 4s 2d.. The receipts since last meeting amounted 'to £2159 10s 6d, including £1965 ■ 12s 3d in-subsidy. Accounts amounting to £1093 7s 4d were recommended for payment. A letter from Mr T. Wagg,. relative to the building of drays, was 1 referred to the engineer, to, use his discretion when the Council has decided to build vehicles of this class. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Or. Foreman, it was decided, "That this Committee recommends the Council to give, favourable consideration to the application of Messrs Johnsou and Montgomery for the expenditure of a sum of £lO out of the riding revenue, with thirds available from see#on* 1, 5, and 6,- Block X, Miki Miki, in repairing the road of «c?*sg' to the said sections." Eaton and others, suggesting, .the ©fefctton of a roadman's cottage at the Maori Gardens* was referred to Cr, Miller and the engineer to inquire as to whether a suitable site can be procured in the vicinity," and report to the Council. The opinion of the County solicitor as to the Council's responsibility for making good the loss on stock sold out.of the public pound having been read, it was resolved, "That this committee recommends the Council to apply to the Borough Council for a statement, showing the sum (if any) which has, during the past twelve months, been paid into the borough fund as surplus from pound sales of stock impounded from County roads." It was decided that application be made to Mi* W. M. Laing for payment of the contribution of £5 promised some time ago by Kim towards the cost of repairing the Maungapurupuru-ty>ad. On the motion of 'Cr. Patchett, . the -clerk was instructed to ascertain the nature of the proposals which have received the approval of the Land Board in connection with the expenditure of thirds' from section interested in the Puketoi, Waihoki and Rakaunui roads, and if any of these be for other purposes than metalling, application be made to the Land Board for consent to an alteration which will enable the Council to expend sueh amounts in metalling. On the motion of Cr. Patchett, the County engineer was instructed to prepare plans and specifications for removing the Hutewai-road bridge, which is in an unsafe condition.
