RAINS IN INDIA.
COLLAPSE OF RIVEiR EMBANKMENT. NUMBER OF~ILLAGES DESTROYED. (Received Last Night, 9.20 o'clock.) CALCUTTA, August 11. In consequence of heavy rains, the embankments of the Damodar river collapsed, and a number of villages were destroyed. Agreat loss of life occurred. A TERRIBLE DISASTER. ENORMOUS LOSS OF LIFE. THOUSANDS HOMELESS AND STARVING. (IReceived Last Night, 11.30 o'clock.) CALCUTTA, August 11. Bardwan is six feet under water. Of thirty thousand inhabitants, only two hundred reached the railway station. A terrible loss of life is feared. The line is submerged for fifteen miles, cutting off communication. Miles of country are flooded. . Thousands are homeless and starving, their houses being washed away and cattle destroyed. - '
