The Rev A. Hodge and Miss Hodge, of Napier., are spending a few days in Masterton.
Mr Archie McMinn, of Carterton, has joined the staff of the D-aiuie-virke News as travelling representative.
' Mr B. Lewis, Wellington manager of the British and Continental Piano Company, was a visitor to Masterton yesterday. Mr L. Barns, a cousin of Mr L. T. Hughes, of Masterton, died at Palmerston on" Sunday night from tubercular meningitis. 'Mr R. Parker, who is at present in the employ of the Pahiatiia Borough Council, has been appointed Borough Overseer at Gisborne.
The death has occurred of another of New Zealand's pioneers in the person of Mir /George. Lipsey, the first white man to settle >n Te Aroha. Mr Harry L. Mqffatt, formerly for 33 years harbqurm'i'ster and wharfinger at Motueka, and a very well-known resident, died at Motueka yesterday, aged 74 years.
It is expected that the Bishop of Wellington will be the preacher on the occasion of- the annual Empire Sunday service in St. Matthew's Church, Master-ton., on June Ist. The Hon W. Fraser, Minister of Public Works, will pass through Masterton for Pahiatiia by the mid-day train to-day.. He will return to Mastprtoo on Friday by motor car from Eketahuna. Miss Ethel Johnson, of Masterton, who was taken ill at Sydney.while on route to the Old Country, returned to Wellington last week, accompanied by her father. Her friends will regret to hear that she is still very weak, and has been compelled to seek medical assistance in Wellington. Mr Ban Jensen was the recipient of a presentation from the Parkvale people last week in honour of his coming marriage, and as a mark of appreciation of his unremitting services .it the numerous dances at Parkvale. Mr A. E. Miaunsell made the presentation, a fine .warm travelling nig. remarking that Mr Jan sen had often been tried and never yet had been found wanting.
