A THURSDAY ISLAND STORY

MELBOURNE, March 9.

A story from Thursday Island is in circulation. It states that the Administrator of Papua, Mr Smith, and party, reached the -Furari River, buillt rafts, and had begun to d>>, scend towards the coast. Oil the way the. natives went in search of fr.od, but did not return. Others followed, but were met by a tribe ' of natives and were killed. Little' is known of these natives except that tiny behead their victims and wear the heads, as trophes of valour, on a string round the waist. It is believed the' authorities are aware of the fact that the party are dead except two natives, who ran away and reached Goaribari. There is absolutely no official news available, however, in Melbourne.
