THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. SATURDAY, AUGUST 21, 1909. IS MASTERTON AWAKE?

It appears that it may be taken for granted that the site of the works of the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company, Ltd., will be in the Wairarapa. The question uf locality of the works, is one of intense importance to Masterton, provided the most suitable site can be obtained within aw easy distance of the town. The business people- of Masterton have been negligent enough in the matter of land settlement, and in regard to other propositions,, which, if properly supported and persevered in would, unquestionably, have resulted in great benefit to, practically, everyone in the town. In this matter of a site for the works of the new freezing company, we trust that our leading citizens are going to show themselves to be quite wideawake. Elsewhere in this issje we publish extracts from a most interesting aod instructive letter written by Mr Gv W. ILeadley, Managing Director of the Fairfield Freezing Works,

I who in a recognised authority upon I the establishing and running of such concerns. In rsgard to establishment, the three most important matters to be considered, says Mr Leadley, are railway facilities, water , supply, and drainage. "It is," declares the same authority, "of very great importance that you should have a sufficient supply of good water.'" At Fairfield, where they depend on the water race system of the Ashburton Plain, they have had to do a great deal of experimenting with filter basins, etc., in order to obtain the necessary cleanliness, and even then, Mr Leadley writes that he has heard complaints that the wool-scour ing is not what it ought to be owing to the want of absolutely pure water. However, we have no I doubt that our readers interested i in the freezing works v movement will carefully peruse Mr Leadley's letter. It would certainly seem as though no better site than one at the Waingawa river could be selected. It would be of a very central character, most conveniently situated, otherwise, while an abundance of the purest water wou Id be available, in addition to which most satisfactory drainage facilities could be installed in naturally porous country. The mere fact that the establishment of works at the Waingawa would be of benefit to Masterton is by no means a sufficient reason in itself for advocating such a step being taken, but when it is considered that-no better site could be found, all points carefully weighed, then in view of the further, fact that the works would be a great boon to Masterton the business people of this town may well bestir themselves, and make a strenuous effort to bring what influence they can to bear towards securing establishment of the work at the site mentioned.
