SITUATION IN CRETE.
GREECE'S REPLY TO THE
PORTE. United Press Association-By Electric Telegraph Copyright. Received August 20, 10.45 p.m. LONDON. August 20. Greece's reply to Porte is conciliatory and promises entirely to conform to the decisions of protecting Powers and to abstain from encouraging any eventful agitation in Crete. Mutinous militiamen hoisted the Greek flag at the fort at the entrance of Candia harbour, and threatened to shoot the Greek officers objecting, but later they were persuaded to return to the barracks and subsequently at the Cretan Govenments's intance, and in order to prevent international occupation the Government lowered the flag unopposed.
