Mr G. Pay ling, a well-known mer- ■■ chant, and ex-Mayor of Chrasfcchurch, died yesterday. At Wellington, on Wednesday last Mlhh M. P. MacGoun, -at 'Carterton, eldest daughter «o'f 'the late Mr R. P. MacGoun. <-4l tfnvercargill, was married to 'Boug-Jaa. Mr H. Douglas,-of Levin, waa best man, and Mi&s R. 'Ma?.Goun bridesmaid. Miss Eva Shepherd, of Masterton, was married to Mr A. C. Murphy, fifth son of Mr John Murphy, of, Featherston, at Featherston, on Wed- ; nesday last./ Mr Herbert Murphy was beat man, and Mr N. Hodder groomsman. Misses Eva Hodder, •Eva Edlin, of Petone, and Yelden •>(2), of Masterton, were bridesmaids.

Mr Harley Donald, who has been on an extended tour to the United States, returned to Masterton on Thursday. He had a splendid trip, and whilst abroad took the opportunity of visiting a number of places of note. Mr Donald, who returned to New Zealand via Vancouver, Honolulu and Fiji, had the good fortune to renew the acquaintance with several ex-Mastertonians his travels.

The death occurred on Thursday night at Waihaka, on the shores of Lake Taupo, oi Hitiri te Paerata, a noted old Maori chief,.of the Ngati'Raukawa tribe. Hitiri was one of the heroes of the battle of Orakpu, the /final engagement in the Waikato war, 1864. His father, uncle, and brother were 'killed in the fight, and his sister, Ahumai (who died -at Taupo last year), was severely wounded. Hitiri escaped with the remnant of his hapu, after a stubborn resistance, lasting three days, in which overhdlf the garrison of the ■ Orakau pa were killed.

The death occurred in Wellington, on Tuesday, of an old and much respected resident of the Wairnrapa. Mr Jas. Baillie. The deceased had been ailing for some time previous to his death. It is about some forty- ] three years ago since the deceased ; arrived in Greytown, where he started as a builder and contractor. Later on he went in for sawmilling in partnership with the late Mr W. H. P. Jones, at the Moroa. At a subsequent date he ran a similar venture with Mr Terry atPapawai. He was one of the founders of the • Greytown Foresters' Lodge, and was an active member of the Presbyterian Church. Of late years he led a re- -' tired' life in Greytown, and about a year ago, left the district wtth his family, taking up his residence in Wellington. The deceased at time of * his death was 76 years old.
