The Canterbury College Board of Governors, yesterday, appointed Mr Norman Murray Bell, M.A., to hold the first Trinity College (Cambridge) Scholarship, the institution of which was agreed to by the Board recently on the representations made by Professor Haslam. At the annual meeting of the Huia Hockey Club, last evening, a very hearty vote or thanks was accorded to Miss M. Hampton for having so capably carried out the duties of secretary and treasurer during the psst year. It was mainly through her efforts thai. the club showed such a good credit balance. Mr J. K. Davis, who has acted as first officer of the Nimrod ever since she was placed in commission for the purpose of the expedition, took command of the Nimrod yesterday, Captain Evans having signed off. ' Captain Davis is to take the Nimrod Home via Sydney and possibly Melbourne, states a Press Association telegram. The Hon. Dr. Findlay (Education Board's representative), Mr Cha/ies Wilson (Parliamentary representative) and Mr C. Watso" (teachers' representative), have been re-elected ' unopposed to the Victoria College Council. Sir Robert Stout (graduates representative> did not stand for reelection. Mr J. G. W. Aitken has been elected without opposition in his place. Mr and Mrs H. F. Smith, of Carterton, Wairarapa, celebrated their golden wedding at their son's residence at Palmerston North, on Saturday la3t. there being a large family gathering. Mr Smith arrived in Wei lington in 1840 in the ship Oriental. Mrs Smith, who is a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Sellers/Lower Hutt, arrived in 1841, in the ship Arab. They were married in Lower Hutt in 1859 by the Rev. Jas. Innes, and lived in Wellington until 1880, when they went to Carterton, where they have resided for the past 29 years. The family consists of Mr J. A. Smith (Palmerston North), Mr W. H. Smith and Mr A. G. L. Smith (of Wellington), Mr Walter L. Smith (Petone), and Mr A. H. Smith ot Mr J. C. Williamson's Company. A Press Association message from Taihape records the death at that township of Mr Frank Gibbons, proprietor of the Gretna Hotel. Mr Gibbons, who was 39 years of age, was the eldest son of the late Mr S. GibbonS, for many years proprietor, of the White Horse Hotel, Marton. Mr Frank Gibbons was formerly well-known in sporting circles, especially at Hunt Club contests, in several of which he rode his own horse Seddon to victory. For some years past he had resided at Taihape, as licensee of the Gretna Hotel, the freehold of which he purchased some time ago. The deceased, who was a brother of Mr S. J. Gibbons (who races under the name of "Mr F. Preston"), was a member] of the Taihape Borough Council, and treasurer of the local Masonic Lodge.
