The Hon. T. W. Hislop, Mayor of Wellington, does not intend to contest the Mayoral seat at the next election. Mrs Kitcat, wife of the Rev. V. H. Kitcat, of Eketahuna, who has been on an extended holiday to Honolulu, returned home on Thursday last. Captain John Barr, who was in charge of the yacht Thistle, which unsuccessfully sailed against the Volunteer in the race for the America Cup in 1887, is dead. Amongst the officers in the Department of Roads who will retire on March 31st under the age limit, is Mr G. T. Robinson, District Roads Engineer, who has been 34 years in the service. Mr H. P. Hugo, sub-manager for Messrs George and K>rsley, has resigned his position in the Economic, after ten years' service, to enter into business on his own account at Masterton. On Friday last the Paka Koura Hockey Club presented Miss A. Cundy, secretary of the Club, who is to be married shortly, with a handsome silver egg stand and salt and pepper holders. Whilst playing with some children on Saturday afternoon. Master Colin Mackersey, a son of Mrs Mackersey, Renall Street, had the misfortune to fail and break his left forearm. The lad is progressing as satisfactorily as can be expected.

Lieutenant T. Herd, of ;the Wellington Garrison Band, has been appointed judge of the Reefton Band Contest, to be held on the 26th, and 2 r (th inst. This is the fifth occasion on which the West Coast Bands' Association has selected Lieutenant Herd to judge its contesta. At Wellington, on Thursday last; Miss Florence Anderson, eldest daughter of Mrs Anderson, formerly of Mangamahoe, was married to Mr M. Kobinson. of the Press Association staff, Wellington. Misses Rose Anderaon, Nellie Anderson and Dorothy Vile were the bridesmaids. The death occurred at Masterton, on Saturday, of Mrs Miller, wife of Mr Alex. Miller, of Masterton. The deceased lady was quite a young woman, being about 20 years of age, and was only married a year ago. Sincere sympathy will be felt for Mr Miller, in his sad loss, also with the deceased's parents, Mr and Mrs Hood, of Lincoln Road, at whose residence the death occurred. A slight accident, which have had worse results, occurred to Mr J. Duckett, of Mild Miki, in Masterton on Saturday afternoon last. I Mr Duckett was riding home on a young horse, which commenced to play up near Mr J. C. Ewington's shop. Mr Duckett was thrown off on to his head, and rendered temporarily unconscious He was taken to Messrs Pinhey Bros, where he remained until he recovered sufficiently to proceed home again, about two hours later. Mr W. G. Taylor, the well-known veterinary surgeon, of Masterton, met with a nasty accident at Kopuaranga on Friday. While riding motor-cycle to Mauriceville he ran into a bank by the roadside, and gave his knee a bad rick, through becoming jammed between the machine and the bank. Mr Taylor lay where he was hurt for nearly an hour, when be was picked up and carried to Kopuaranga railway station. He is now confined to his bed at Masterton, and will probably be so for about a fortnight. Mr E. W. Stager, usher at the Supreme Court is to be retired on superannuation. Mr Seager's connection with the public service dates back to the old provincial davs. . H° arrived in Lvttelton in 3851, ard in 1856 was appointed inspector of constabulary. Subsequently hp filled the position of chief gaoler at and continned in that port for 25 years. He l?ft the Government employ, and eventually was appointed usher at tie Supreme Court in Christchurch. He alst occupied tha position of librarian to the Canterbury Law Society.

There was a representative attendance of settlers and others at the Borough Council Chambers, Carterton, on Saturday evening, to make arrangements for a farewell to Mr John Hart, writos our Carterton correspondent. Mr J. T. M. Hornsby was voted to the; chair, and committees were set up to canvass Carterton, ParKvale and Daleficld for donations, the function to take. the form of a social and presentation. The lists are to be in by Thursday next, and the farewell will most likely be held on that evening. Mr Hart's new home will be Onga Onga. Hawke's Bay, for which place he will leave on Saturday next.
