A TRIPACROSSTHETARARUA3

A party of five, consisting of Messrs Pratt (3). Bryant and Dowie, left Hukanui last Tuesday morning, and made a trip across the Tararua mountains. They state that the source of the Otaki and Mangahao rivers are only separated by a narrow saddle. The party then journeyed to Otaki, and walked all told about eighty miles, and one night slept on the* top of ML Dundas, which is about 5,000 feet above the sea level. They describe the scenery as magnificent, and they passed through thousands of acres of red birch, rimu, etc., which they considered suitable for milling purposes, should a mill at any time be able to get within reach of it Plenty of wild cattle and blue ducks were seen on the journey , and also a fair number of New Zealand native birds. No rain fell from the time they left until their return today, which was exceedingly fortunate for them. Their clothes and boots to-day looked a little the worse for wear, and showed signs of the rough country they had traversed. They strongly advise none but experienced bushmen to undertake the trip, as some parts are dangerous, and one is apt to get bushed easily.

GENERAL,

A movement is on foot amongst the settlers of Hopelands with a view to having Harding's road bridge officially opened by a Minister or the member for the district. The Woodville County Council at a previous meeting passed a resolution to the effect that no official opening should take place, but the settlers of Hopelands feel that Mr Ross' activity in getting a £I,OOO grant from the Government, should, in some

way, be recognised. The Woodville Horticultural Show, to be held on Wednesday next, is now the theme ol ! conversation, and there is every prospect of this Show eclipsing all previous exhibitions. The second annual meeting of the Maharahara Athletic Society will be held on March 17th in Mr Galloway's paddock, about six miles from Woodville. Besides, an interesting programme of foot races there is a maiden hunting competition, open to horses that have never won a jumping event at any A. and P. Show. The Pahiatua District Band held a final practise this evening for their open air concert on Wednesday evening at the Mayor's Grounds. Mr ; Crewe's well-kept garden and grounds have been highly commented upon, ! and are admirably suited for occasions such as the above, and it is to be hoped that a large gathering will be present on Wednesday evening as i a splendid programme has been ar- ! ranged. The proceeds will be devoted I towards buying new instruments as j at present there are not sufficient ia- ! struments for the number of players j in the band. j An effort is being made to have the Catholic Church painted before ! the winter sets in. I The Chairman of the Pahiatua Ounty Council, Mr T. Hodgina, to- ' gether with Mr Milne, the County Engineer, left early this morning to inspect the roads in the Conoor district. The annual meeting of the Woodlands Hunt Club will be held in the Commercial Hotei on Tuesday evening, at 8 p.m. Miss Bertha Reeve, who has been appointed assistant in mathematics to Professor Picken at Victoria College, matriculated and gained a Junior University Scholarship from the Wellington Girls' College three years ago. She secured her B.A. degree last year. Mr P. Debreceny's Don Carlos was railed to Wanganui to-day to fulfil his engagements at the Wanganui meeting. A cricket match will he played next Saturday atKohunui between Mangatainoka and a local eleven. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on their Woodville sale to-day as follows:-We had a good yarding of sheep and a medium yarding of cattle. Prices ranged as fol-lows:—Two-tooth ewes 13s 6d to 14s, fresh f.m. ewes 9s 9d to 10s, f.m. ewes 6s lOd to 7s, 2-tooth Lincoln rams bred by Mr R. E. Beattie (Woodville) 3to 3J guineas. Cattle. —Fat and forward cows £3 17s 6d, 1\ to 3year steers £3 7s 6d, empty forward cows 30s to £2 10s, empty heifers 395.
