RACING.

WOODVILLE RACES.

B} Telegraph—Press Association

WOODVILLE, February 17,

The autumn meeting of the Wocdville Jockey Club commenced to-day in fine weather. A little rain fell during the afternoon, but did not interfere with the enjoyment of the sport. The sum of £7,430 passed through the totaliastor, as compared with £8,754 for the corresponding day last year —a decrease of £1,324. There were seven bookmakers inside and one outside. The fees of the bookmakers more than made up for the loss in the totalisator revenue.

The racing throughout the day was of a high order—large fields and close and exciting finishes. The Cup was a very easy win for Woodhey. The biggest surprise of the day was Kelso, who cleared out and "spreadeagled" the field. Two horses fell in the Hurdles race. Rosegrove came down at the obstacle in the straight, close to thd stand, and his rider, Tyford, was rather badly hurt. He remained insensible for some time, and was then removed into the town. When he regained consciousness. It was then found that luckily no bones were broken. At the nex jump Whatakura lost bis ridsr, who escaped injury.
