GASWORKS IMPROVEMENT.

' COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS.

A meeting of the Gas and Library Committee of the Masterton Borough Council was held on Friday, the 7th instant. There were present Councillors Elliott (in the chair), Haughey, Morris, and Pragr.ell. A report of the Gas Manager of the 7ch August in the following terms was submitted and received:— "I beg have to submit herewith .plans and estimates of coat for plant required for the new carbonising station, and would recommend that the following be ordered from the 'Council's English agents, Messrs ■Coward and Co., of London. "Retort Bench. —The whole of the material required to set two arches of seven retorts with Gibbons' patent A.B.C regenerative settings, including iron work, valves, mouthpieces, tar and liqaor, take offs, fire clay retorts, etc. Approximate cost delivered free on board steamer, English port, £6OO. "There is included in the above " "some 40,000 fife bricks. I prupose, if a satisfactory brick can be procurt d, tD obtain these in the colony. Tha rest of the material is specialised, and can be obtained more cneaply from England. "Condensers. —Prices are Submitted from various English firms -—plan3 herewith —but I am of the drtiioion that I could obtain in the JJ Train ion the necessary castings to bu Id up a pipe condenser to suit our requirements. "Washer and Scrubber.-—Prices from various tuskers submitted herewith. To meet our present and •future requirements, I would recommend that a Livesey Tar Extractor, capable of dealing with a make of 200,000 cubic feet per twenty- four hodrs be procured. Also a "Clapham's" Patent Eclip«e ' Washer Scrubber, as per plan and ■specification herewith. The present .scrubber can. at some future time, be lengthened and added as a final scrubber. "Cost of new plant £2OO. "Exhauster.—For the purpose of jumping the gas down to the gas holders, I would recommend that an exhauster to deal with 15,000 cubic feat per hour be procured. Thi3 would be coupled up to the engine at present driving the rmallest exhaust er at the Bannister Street Works, leaving the larger one to carry on the Bannister Street plant ur.til the final c :ssation of operations at that site. Cost about £SO. "There will also be required a set of pressure gauges—pressuve and vacuum registsr-photomoter— and other accessories for the new retort hruse and engine room, about twelve tons of 8-inch C.I. main for the yard connections with the various specials, etc."

Cr Elliott moved, and Cr Haughey seconded, that the material required to erect two arches and retorts, excluding 40,000 fire bricks, be ordered, it being understood that if the Manager cannot procure suitable fire bricks in the Dominion he cable for the same.—The motion was carried. It was resolvleJ that a Livesey Tar Extractor anJ Clapham Eclipse Washer Scrubber be ordered at a icost of approximately £2OO. Cr Elliott moved that an exhauster drum for pumping gas down to the .£a?-h£lders be procured at a cost of abflwrXSO, this drum to be coupled up to one of the existing engines., and that the necessary accessories be procured.—The motion was carried. It was decided to let the question of pipea for the trunk main stand •over until the Manager had reported further. On the subject of the purchase ■of pipea for the main in Powuall Street, the Manager reported receipt of tenders as follows:—A. and T, Co., £8 83 6d per ton; Duthie and 'Co., £8 10s per ton; F.I. Co., £8 13s 9d per ton. Duthie and Co. being the only firm who could deliver at once, Cr Haughey moved, and Cr Mori is seconded, that the Manager deal with that firm. —This was agreed to.
