The Rev. Father Bowe, of Carterton, is seriously ill with influenza. The Rev. J. B. Sneyd, pastor of the Mount Eden Baptist Church, Auckland, is dead. It is understood that Mr D. M'Kenziehas retired from the con.tes*. for the Hutt seat at the next general election. Mr Charles Saunders, the English tenor, who is suffering from a throat affection, is still under medical care. After forty-two years' service in the Customs Mr T. A. Murphy, who f'>: tit-• [.'ist fifteen years has been it ehu.'.e of the Lyttelton office, is retiring. Mr J. Hunter, who hu;i been laid aside with a severe attack of influenza for over n week past, was sufficiently recovered to be able to spend an hour or two in town yester day. News has been received in Ashburton of the sudden death, on July Ist, at Buxt»n (Derbyshire, England), of Mr Wm. Baxter, civil engineer, who, for twenty-nine years, occupied the position of engineer for the Ashburton County Council. Deceased resigned the position of County Engineer at the end of Marc,h, 1905, for the purpose of joining his family, which had taken up its residence' in Scotland two years previously.
