NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Zetland). By Telegraph. CHRISTCHURCH, November 3. At the time fixed for the decision of the New Zealand Cup, one of the biggest crowds ever assembled at Riccarton was on the tip-toe of excitement. For clays previously the praises of the leading favourites had been sounded by the press throughout the dominion, and the different districts from which the various candidates came were well represented by backers. As the horses were paraded, they were eagerly scanned by thousands of onlookers, and on the commencement of preliminaries totalisator business on the race began in earnest. The deflection of Buccleugh left fifteen contestants to go to the post, and in the matter of real fitness on the day Master Delaval, Frisco, Armistice, Gazeley, and Elevation are most worthy of mention, while the palm in this respect would be awarded to the first and second horses and Elevation. The start was delayed several minutes by the vagaries of Mahuta and Armistice, but a splendid start was then effected, and Mahuta who started on the extreme outside quickly took up the running, and passing the stand was closely attended by Elevation and Armistice, while Master Delaval and Apa were at the head of the main division. The black colt led round the turn to the back stretch, and at the mile post had a clear lead of a length. At this point Armistice and Elevation were still holding their positions, but the first-named fell back a furlong further on, and Master Delaval moved up. Mahuta was first into the straight, and his victory was loudly proclaimed. Halfway down Frisco, Lapland and Master Delaval were catching the leader, and whips were brought out on the leading division. Mahuta then lost his position, and an exciting finish resulted in Frisco winning by a length from Master Delaval, with Lapland a good third, and Mahuta close up fourth. The latter ran a very fine race, and but for his preparation having been somewhat hurried, consequent on hi 3 lack of work during the winter would have won the Cup of 1907. The Stewards' Handicap needs but little description. There were twenty starters, and at the rise of the barrier Gold Crest and Lord Soult cleared away from the., field, the former winning" by half a length. FLEMINGTON RACES.
