ABATTOIR WATER SUPPLY.
CONCRETE STORAGE TANK PROPOSED. NO DANGER OF AN IMMEDIATE SHORTAGE. The select committee, consisting of the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine), and Crs Haughey, and Morris, appointed by the Borough Council to thoroughly investigate the position of the abattoir water supply, visited the. abattoir on Saturday, and enquired carefully into the facts, giving rise to the "supposition that there was a danger of the water supply at the works being totally inadequate during the summer. Upon their return, the Mayor and Cr Haughey expressed their opinion that there was absolutely no reason to fear a shortage of water. While at the wcrks, the committee observed that the water from the spring from which the present supply is drawn, was to a great extent going to waste. They made a test, and found that the overflow from the spring averaged about six gallons per minute, or, approximately, 10,000 gallons in twenty-four hours. The capacity of the tanks at the abattoir was only 800 gallons, and it was realised that the only way to save the overflow from the spring was to build a new concrete storage reservoir capable of holding about 20,000 gallons. This work, it is estimated, will cost about £IOO, and will form the subject of the committee's recommendation to the next meeting of the council. If the recommendation is adopted, the work will be proceeded with at once, and it is expected that the tank will be able to hold a fortnight's water supply at a time without drawing on the spring- during that period. The committee did not think that there was anj necessity for connecting the abattoir with the high-pres-sure water supply yet nor even tapping the. neighbouring water race for a supply, because if the present spring did at any time give out, there was another spring available adjoining the borough property. To acquire access to this source of supply it would be necessary to purchase about two acres of land, and if this were done, there would be sufficient water to supply three times the present demands of the abattoir. Generally speaking, the committee did not see any danger of a shortage, and the risk would be all the more remote by the construction of a storage reservoir as suggested.
