TE ARAI ESTATE.

* By Telegraph—Press Association. GISBORNE, November 2. In the Te Arai compensation case, the owner, the Hon. Randall Johnston, was awarded £106,502, the claim being £127,000. The lessee was awarded £7,457. Each award includes costs allowed and a deduction of £3,474 is made from the owner's award for the goodwill of lease, having two and a half years to run. The Chief Justice regretted that the award was not unanimous, Mr Bateson (representing the owner) being a dissenting party, considering the amount below the selling value, while Mr Matthewson, for the Crown, reluctantly agreed to the amount fixed, so that there might be an award. His Honour was not surprised at this disagreement, as the values given by experts were irreconcilable, the average value for the claimant being £136,000, while that of respondent's valuers was £IOI,OOO. One of the Government experts fixed the value at £97,000.
