DESERVED EULOGY.

4> The eulogiums which have been passed by the Australian press and Australian and British rifle authorities upon the New Zealand rifle team respecting their performances at the recent Federal rifle meeting, held at Rand wick, have assuredly been well-earned. They had to fight against enormous odds. Much of the firing took place in a palpitating heat and a dazzling glare to which they were totally unaccustomed, and

they had had no practice under climatic and other conditions such as they were there subjected to. The Australians, on the other hand, were perfectly at home under the prevailing conditions, and therefore had all the advantage of the competitors from our milder country. These drawbacks notwithstanding, our riflemen gave a splendid account of themselves, taking second place in the Empire Match, coming fourth in the Australian Match, in which 28 teams competed, and winning the triangular match against the crack nhots of Bathurst and Great Britain. The Sydney Morning Herald rightly says: "New Zealand should be proud of her team." We think so, too, and heartily congratulate them upon the manner in which they have upheld the high reputation of the dominion in the matter of marksmanship. We would like to learn that there was a probability of the Australian and British teams visiting New Zealand to try conclusions with our men here.
