GORE RACES. : By Telegraph—Press Association. GORE, October 31. The Gore spring meeting was continued, to-day, in fine woather. The sum of £3,033 was put through the totalisator. The total for the two days was £6,919. Results:— Domain Hack Handicap, 6 furlongs. Lord C'utha, 7.2, 1; Rifle Range, 7.12, 2; Santa Claus, 7.0, 3 Also started—Sarsfield. Won by a neck. Time,-limn 17sec. -Dividend, £4 18s. District Hack Handicap, 6 furlongs.—Turret, 7.7, 1; Lady Ronald, 9.10, 2; Thyra, 9.4,' 3. Also started Derwent, Bla:k and Brown* Unawares and Coffer. Won by a long neck. Time, lmin 19 l-ssec., e Dividends, £6 18s and 12s. Waikaka Handicap, i mile.—Jolly Friar, 9.6, 1; Orderly, 8.12, 2. Only starters. Master Foote traversed a mile in lmin 52sec, Melodrama and Peru nine furlongs in 2min 2Jsec, and Lady Diffidence ten furlongs in 2mfn 18|sec.'Mooltan put in a strong working gallop, and with Socialist skipped over five furlongs in lmin Bsec. (By Zetland). / - • THE NEW- ZEALAND CUP ■' s •■ MEETING^ The "New Zealand Cup, the principal event of the year and one ir? which the sporting public from one end of the-dominion to the other take a. very pronounced interest for months before its decision, will be run tomorrow at Riccarton, when the result will bring the usual satisfaction to supporters of the winner and disappointment to the army of supporters of unsuccessful competitors.' After the final acceptance there are sixteen candidates left in, and thou- " sands of people assembled on the convincing ground will expect to witness a very spirited contest Included in the acceptors are at least seven capable of galloping over the two 'miles at a very solid- pace, and it is' more than likely that the record for the race, that of Canteen, 3min 27 l-ssec, in 1903, will be nearly equalled. Were track v. ork a good line to go upon, in the endeavour to select the winner, Master Delaval, Mahuta, Elevation, Buccleugh, and Paritutu would be expected to fight out the battle for places. It sometimes happens, however, that the candidates executing the mos; ordinary work prior to the meeting are enabled to show the best form on the eventful v day, and it is on this account that the puzzle is made more difficult to , solvt. Those that appear- to have the best chance of success are Master Delaval, Armistice,* Manuka, Apa, Elevation, and Buccleugh, and tcf'select three to fill the places 1 will name— . / Elevation. / Mahuta. Master Delaval, with Apa as next best. It is probable that a field of eighteen will face the barrier in order to contest the Stewards' Handicap, of six furlongs. In such a-big field it naturally follows that thi starters capable of quickly taking up the leading position have the best chances of success, inasmuch as those slow in getting away are liable to be considerably knocked about in the rush for the first turn. The much-fancied candidate, Martello, who won two good races at Trentham a fortnight ago, is reported to have gor.e soro, and is therefore an unlikely starter. Others well backed for the event are Munjeet, Full Kate, Lord Soult, Fire Iron, Idealist, King Billy,- and Cross Battery. The race bears a very open appearance, but the places may be filled by— • ' Lord Soult Munjeet Fire Iron The remaining first day's events have filled fairly well, and the following are suggested as likely to score: — Welcome Stakes--Armlet and Fleetfoot.
