Out of a mob of 635 cattle travelling from Walcha (330 miles north of Sydney) 585 died in one night, it is supposed from eating thistles after rain. ANTARCTIC RESEARCH. deceived October 31, 10.1 a.m. SYDNEY, October 31. Commander Shackleton, leader of the Antarctic exploring expedition, has .cabled to the secretary of the Geographical Society that he will lecture in Sydney on December 6th. His ship will be in Sydney during 1908, when he will deliver another lecture, anil present a full set of specirrens to the Sydney Museum. COLONIAL SUGAR COMPANY. Received "October 81, 10.1 a.m. SYDNEY, October 33. At the half-yearly meeting of the Colonial. Sugar Company the net profits were stated to be £118,053, which, with £91,829 brought forward, made £209,882 available /for distribution. A 10 per cent, dividend was declared, and the sum of £99,882 carried forward. The chainran said the abolition of the duty in N£w Zealand, excepting that it would possibly create a larger demand, would not alter the position as sugar-refining had never been protected in New Zealand. The present crop, he added, would be heavy, but the drought, both in Australia and Fiji, was likely to have a bad effect on next year's output. Received November 1, 1.3 a.m." BRISBANE, October 31. News has been received that a cyclone occurred off Woodlark, Goodenough and Normanby Islands. At the latter place the cyclone was accompanied by a tidal wave and earth tremors. Eleven boats were driven ashore, but no life was lost. WOOL SALES. Received October 31, 11.50 p.m. SYDNEY, October 31. At the wool sales the record price of 174 d for greasies was obtained.
