SMALL BIRD NUISANCE.
(By Telegraph—Parliamentary Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, September 4. Mr E. G. Allen asked the Minister, fo: Agricutlure, in the House, this afternoon, whether, considering the loss to farmers caused by.the ravages of small birds, he will give instructions to have fresh experiments made with a view to discover an efficient means of destroying or abating the small bird nuisance? In 1903 experiments were made, but it appears that only poisoned wheat was used in such experiments, which have proved ineffectual. It is known that sparrows remove the outside of seeds before taking the kernel, therefore it is necessary that sfieli-less grain should be used to convey the poison, such as rice, pearl-barley, tago, shelled oats, etc. The Minister replied that the question of the destruction of small birds was being carefully gone into, and experiments would be conducted from time to time with a view to determining what was the be&t means of coping with the pest.
