November 7, 9.52 a.m. MELBOURNE, Nov. 7. If there was one candidate who engaged more attention than another in the Cup it was Poseidon. Solution did not laok admirers. Those who guessed that Solution wonld •try to win all the way were true prophets, for she was out in front immediately after starting, and remained there, varying her lead between one and three lengths until the home turn was rounded, where in the immediate distance were Noreen, Poseidon, Wandin, and JBooran. For a moment in the straight Solution appeared to jbe going well within herself, but in a. •twinkling Poseidrn shook off Noreen, OBooran, and Wandin, and .charged at the New Zealand mare, who, after <a short struggle, went all to piecep. In the next half-furlong, Poseidon iset up a lead of three lengths. Then the race was as gnod as over, but Clayton did not give Poseidon an opportunity to alow down. Riding him right out, he won by nearly a .'length from the fast finishing Antonious, who oleverly beat Proceed, .and Dyed Garments was fourth. New South Wales, therefore, supplied the first tbree horses. Solution showed herself not partial to the diatanoo, and, though Noreen was '•well 'placed in the straight, she failed to maintain the pace demanded. The surprise of the race was the promient position occupied by Antonions, who came from a rearward position, and finished at a tremendous rate. He was not quite so fortunate in the race as Poseidon, #bo bad b nice run on the rails all

the way, and went over no more ground than was necessary. There was tremendous cheering as Poseidon returned to eoale. That he won his race in grand style there is no doubt, and the victory was even more decisive than his success in the Caulfield Cup and Derby. The field was one of the smallest for mapy yeara, and the time, too, was the slowest since 1898, but the ground was not at all favourable to fast time, and the failure to attack records should not detract from the merits of the performance, for Poseidon is one of the be«t colts the Australian turf has had for many a year.

TURF NOTES. (By Zetland). Good average acceptances have been received for ■ the Tarntabi-Oar-terton meeting, whioh will open on Friday. The field for the Guineas, however, is rather disappointing, although the race itsel? may be a close one. The racing, track is in first rate order, and as the majority of the contestants are wull forward as regards condition the racing should be moßt interesting throughout. The following are suggested as likely to be the most prominent in their re spective events—> Belvedere Hack Pytohley and Strathflllan. & Railway Handicap—Petticoat and Wind. Hack Hurdles—Faro and Sangitoto. Wairarapa Guineas Maid of Astolat. . Wairarapa County Cup Sub marine and Douche. King Edward Hack—Marstone and St. Brandon. Gladstone Hack Welter—Faro and Truthful. Trial Plate—Sharkeyn and Lebecclo.
